Family is supposed to be the people we love the most. But sometimes those same people are the hardest ones to actually like. Just because someone is related to you doesn’t mean they’re easy to be around. A parent who always criticizes, a sibling who only thinks about themselves, or a relative who drains your energy can make every visit or phone call feel heavy.
You can still care about them. Old memories and that sense of “they’re family” keep pulling at you. At the same time, being around them often leaves you tired, frustrated, or quietly angry. That’s the hard part—feeling both things at once. You’re expected to just forgive and stick close no matter what, so when you don’t feel that warm, easy love, it’s easy to feel guilty.
The truth is, it’s normal to struggle with this. Caring about someone doesn’t mean you have to enjoy their company. You can love them in your own way and still protect your peace. That’s not being a bad person—it’s just being honest.
Time to change the locks.
